Cold Weather Prep Essential for Florida Residents
Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org
**Severe Weather Awareness Week Wraps Up with Focus on Cold Weather Preparedness**
As Severe Weather Awareness Week 2025 comes to a close, the Sarasota County Emergency Services emphasized the importance of preparing for extreme cold temperatures in Florida. Despite the Sunshine State’s warm reputation, severe cold outbreaks occur at least once annually. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the “5 P’s of Cold Weather Prep” to stay safe when temperatures drop.
1. **Pets:** Ensure outdoor pets are brought inside or provided with a warm and protective shelter to keep them safe during cold weather.
2. **Plants:** Cover cold-sensitive plants to shield them from freezing temperatures that could cause damage.
3. **People:** Dress appropriately for the weather by wearing warm layers, including hats and gloves, to guard against the cold.
4. **Pipes:** Protect pipes by covering them and allowing outdoor faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing and potential damage.
5. **Practice Fire Safety:** Use safe indoor heating sources and avoid using fuel-burning devices, such as grills, indoors. These devices can emit deadly carbon monoxide.

Sarasota County Emergency Services also reminded residents that preparation is key not only for temperature extremes but also for wildfires, which can happen in dry conditions throughout the state. Take the time to review safety precautions to better protect your family and property in extreme weather events.
