Sarasota County Urges Sun Safety Awareness

Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org

**Sarasota County Emergency Services Shares Sun Safety Tips**

Sarasota County Emergency Services urges residents and visitors to practice proper sun safety to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. According to information sourced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UV rays can damage skin in as little as 15 minutes, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding your skin.

Key Sun Protection Recommendations:

- **Use Sunscreen**: Broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 is recommended for exposed skin. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

- **Wear Protective Clothing**: Hats, sunglasses, and clothing that shields the skin provide added layers of protection.

- **Seek Shade**: Especially during midday hours when UV rays are strongest.

- **Hydrate and Swim Safely**: When at the beach, stay hydrated and ensure swimming takes place near a lifeguard for safety.

Local residents and visitors can find more detailed sun protection advice from the CDC by visiting cdc.gov/cancer/skin/basic_info/sun-safety.htm. Stay sun-smart and enjoy outdoor activities safely this season!
