Officials advise swimming near lifeguard stations and paying attention to warning flags displayed on lifeguard stands. The flags indicate different hazards: a flag displaying “Water closed to public” means the area is unsafe; a flag for high hazard warns of high surf and strong currents; medium hazard flags indicate moderate surf or currents; and low hazard flags denote calm conditions with a recommendation to exercise caution. A flag indicating dangerous marine life is also used. Officials added that the absence of any flags does not guarantee safe water.
