Prioritize Fire Safety This Holiday Season
Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org
As the winter holiday season approaches, officials urge residents to prioritize fire safety, particularly when it comes to home decorations. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than one-third of home decoration fires are caused by candles.
To help prevent these incidents, it is recommended that candles be placed at least 12 inches away from any flammable materials. Residents are also encouraged to consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can replicate the look, smell, and feel of traditional candles without the fire risk.
If using real candles, ensure they are placed in stable holders and located in areas where they cannot easily be knocked over. These precautions can help keep holiday celebrations safe.
For more information, residents can check guidelines from Sarasota County Emergency Services.
