Cold Weather Shelters Open Tonight in Sarasota

Sarasota County officials have announced the opening of cold weather shelters for individuals in need due to forecasted low temperatures. The shelters will be available tonight, December 3, starting at 5:00 p.m. and will remain open until breakfast on December 4.

The following locations will provide shelter:

- **Salvation Army**

- Address: 1400 10th St, Sarasota

- Opening Time: 5:30 p.m.

- **100 Church**

- Address: 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port

- Opening Time: 5:00 p.m.

Dinner, snacks, and breakfast will be provided by All Faiths Food Bank. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own sleeping materials.

In Sarasota, the Salvation Army is located a short distance from public transportation. It is a 0.2-mile walk from the Breeze bus stop on Orange Avenue at 10th St (Routes 7 and 8), and a 0.3-mile walk from the bus stop on Cocoanut Avenue at 9th St (Routes 2 and 99).

In North Port, Breeze Route 9 will operate on a normal schedule, serving stops at Tamiami Trail and Espanola Avenue/Almonte Terrace, which is a 0.1-mile walk to 100 Church. Emergency Management officials are advising residents to keep pets indoors during cold weather and to dress in multiple warm layers if outside during the night or early morning hours. Caution is also advised when using heating devices, as the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases in colder weather.
