Old cell phones, even when deactivated, can still make calls to 911. According to the Sarasota County Emergency Services, this capability means that deactivated phones should not be treated as toys.

When a deactivated phone calls 911, the Sarasota County Public Safety Communications Center does not receive any location data or identifying information regarding the caller. This lack of data can hinder emergency response efforts and potentially delay assistance to those in need.

Residents are urged to be aware of this fact to prevent misuse of old cell phones.
